Through RISEnergy, researchers can apply for free access to the facility to investigate innovative turbine designs, grid integration and hybrid renewable energy systems.

As wind energy continues to play an increasingly important role in Europe’s energy transition, researchers need access to facilities capable of generating accurate operational data. Understanding how turbine components respond to changing wind conditions, interact with the electricity grid and perform over time is crucial for developing more reliable and efficient wind energy technologies.

The Chalmers Wind Turbine provides a unique environment for this research. Equipped with significantly more sensors than a commercial wind turbine, it allows detailed measurements through the blades, tower and foundation, allowing researchers to analyse turbine behaviour under real operating conditions.

What is Chalmers Wind Turbine

Developed by Chalmers University of Technology together with Swedish industry partners, the facility was designed specifically for experimental research. One of its most distinctive features is its 30-metre prototype wooden tower, which gives the opportunity to investigate more sustainable alternatives to conventional steel towers while exploring modular construction concepts.
The infrastructure also supports research on component lifetime, turbine control strategies, grid services such as frequency and voltage control, and the integration of wind energy with solar power and battery storage in islanded energy systems. Its advanced measurement and control system enables researchers to collect detailed operational data that supports the validation of new concepts and technologies.

How access works through RISEnergy

Access to Chalerms Wind Turbine is provided through the Transnational Access (TA) programme of RISEnergy, which enables researchers to use world-class research infrastructures located outside their home country. The programme is open to both academic and industry researchers, at different career stages, whose main affiliation is in a country other than the one hosting the infrastructure.

Researchers apply with a project proposal and, if selected, benefit from:

  • Free access to the infrastructure and its services
  • Scientific and technical support from the hosting facility
