The core aim of RISEnergy lies in its efforts to establish a comprehensive network of research infrastructures, notably providing free access to academic and industry researchers seeking to strengthen their innovative capacities across ten renewable energy target areas. Given its wide technological reach, RISEnergy is the first research infrastructure project of this dimension in Europe.
Advanced materials are a cornerstone of the low-carbon energy transition. Every renewable technology—whether in batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, or next-generation fuels—depends on them. Yet the path from laboratory discovery to industrial deployment remains slow, often hindered by gaps between research, scale-up, and system integration. Accelerating this process is crucial if Europe is to deliver the technologies needed for a climate-neutral future.
“Clean energy innovation depends on both improving today’s technologies and developing new ones that do not yet exist. RISEnergy makes this possible by uniting over 50 research platforms with an open approach that ensures results are shared and reused. This collaboration gives researchers and industry the tools they need to accelerate the full innovation chain, from advanced materials to real technologies,” – Sawako Nakamae, CEA Research Fellow and RISEnergy Materials Science Area Leader.
Through providing free and seamless access to cutting-edge scientific facilities, RISEnergy enables researchers to characterise, test, and validate materials across borders, helping discoveries move faster from the lab into real-world low-carbon applications.
