Description

The design of energy storage devices at the Tomas Bata University (TBU) in Zlín is carried out within the University Institute centres: Centre for Technology Transfer (CTT) and Centre of Polymer Systems (CPS), which obtained the HR Award HRS4R granted by the EC to excellent research institutions. The energy storage research is developed in five directions related to Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors. Moreover, as a sixth direction, the relationship between the energy systems, environment, and society is being examined from a multidisciplinary viewpoint.

The infrastructure (UNITomasBata-LiPCAL) offers the assembly of pouch cell Li-ion batteries. It includes: 1) Pouch cell case forming; 2) Electrode cutting; 3) Electrode stacking; 4) Welding; 5) Side-sealing; 6) Electrolyte filling and vacuum sealing in Ar-filled glovebox, 7) Testing in a wide range of temperatures. The formation and degassing can also be done. To prevent contamination, the assembly facilities are located in a clean room. It allows the researchers to evaluate their developed materials at a prototype level.

Testing Capabilities

The pouch cell prototype can provide a similar testing platform to commercial Li-ion batteries. Users can use the UNITomasBata-LiPCAL to assemble their developed materials into pouch cells and test their electrochemical performance. Technical details of full cell fabrication such as electrode density, P/N ratio, and electrolyte amount can be studied. It can also be used to study the properties of novel electrolytes. It can test the battery performance in a large range of temperatures (-40℃ to 110 ℃).
