TUS-PSSlab

Power System Stability Laboratory of Technical University of Sofia

TA27TUS-PSSlab

Location

8, Kliment Ohridski St. Bl. 12 Office 12 401/12402/12 403

1700 Sofia,  Bulgaria

Description

Due to its unique structure and state-of-the-art equipment, the PSSlab at TUS offers access to both its “pure laboratory environment” and its “real-life” environment. The “pure” PSS lab allows, analytical modelling using STATUS, Neplan and Matlab software, and physical modelling of Alternating Current (AC), Direct Current (DC) and hybrid micro, mini and nanogrids and components including Power Hardware in the Loop (PHiL) and Power Hardware and Human in the Loop (PHHiL) testing. The “real-life” PSS lab allows realistic research in more than 10 representative remotely controlled pilot sites distributed in Bulgaria, which allow both physical visits and performance of different experiments, as well as remotely controlled tests and data acquisition.

Testing Capabilities

High-quality research in the field of voltage, angular and frequency stability, AC, DC and AC+DC Smart Grids (SG) with DER, autonomous, micro and mini grids, generation prediction of DER, Power System (PS) automation and control, modeling and simulation of SG, Human and PS interaction and behaviour is offered and already performed with more than 15 users from Europe conducting research on different topics. An unique option for Power Hardware and Human in the loop (PHHiL) experiments in real life environment is offered.

Technical Equipment

Pure PSS lab:

  • Micro and nanogrid model
  • Physical model of hydro power plant, wind generators
  • Grid simulator

  • Multifunctional laboratory transformer with a variety of primary and secondary windings, reproducing the standard rated voltage levels in the power system: 6.3kV, 10.5kV, 15.75kV, 20kV, 35kV, 110kV, 220kV and 400kV scaled down by a factor of 1/1000
  • Motor generator sets with synchronous, asynchronous and doubly fed induction generators

Real- life PSS lab:
Distributed real life facilities in different sites in Bulgaria for research, PHiL tests and validation, such as:

  • DC nanogrid Pirin Mountain Shelter, 2760m
  • Autonomous AC microgrid, Rhodope Mountain (7 buildings)
  • Hybrid grid connected + autonomous nanogrid near Plovdiv, Bulgaria
  • Hybrid grid connected + autonomous AC+DC nanogrid near Sofia, Bulgaria
  • Autonomous AC microgrid, Rhodope Mountain (5 buildings)
  • Hybrid DC and AC nanogrid, Stara Planina Mountain (2 buildings)
  • Small HPP 630 kW (Pelton) with 30kW rooftop PV
