DBFZ – Research Biogas Plant
TA04 – KIT-DBFZ-FBGA
Location
Torgauer Str. 116
4347 Leipzig, Germany

Description
The DBFZ's research biogas plant (FBGA) complements the spectrum of its application-oriented research. The dimensioning of the biogas plant allows experiments to be carried out on a semi-industrial and industrial scale, therefore ensuring good transferability of the results into practical application.
The FBGA was planned and built to be technically flexible and open for the addition of up- and downstream aggregates, including for substrate pre-treatment or digestate processing. Being extensively equipped with online measuring probes and accompanied by analyses in DBFZ´s own analytical lab, proper process control can be assured.
In the main, the FBGA consist of the following tanks:
- 2 CSTR type reactors with a reactive volume of ~ 190 m³ each
- A CSTR reactor with a reactive volume of 50m³
- A plug-flow digester with a reactive volume of 50 m³
- A post digester
- Digestate storage
- Manure storage
The digestion stages can be operated at either mesophilic or thermophilic temperature level. Within the FBGA, gaseous and liquid streams can be redirected at will.
For biogas utilisation, a CHP engine with an electrical rated capacity of 124 kW and an emergency flare are available on site.
Testing Capabilities
This infrastructure supports anaerobic fermentation experiments at semi-industrial scale. The research biogas plant is also feasible for the testing of full-scale up- and downstream components, or their comparison.
Due to legal restrictions, biowaste as input substrate is not possible.
Also included are digesters, as mentioned above, on-line instrumentation (temperature, pH, conductivity), and process analysis in an inhouse lab.
Technical Equipment
