CENER – Simulation Environment for Solar Energy Systems
TA60 – CENER-SESES
Location
Av. Ciudad de la Innovación nº 7
31621 Sarrigurren, Spain

Description
This infrastructure includes a set of software packages for detailed and high-precision simulation for specific components and systems of any type of solar energy systems, including simulations considering environmental conditions.
- TONATIUH is an open-source software for simulating optical systems by ray-tracing method. This software is appropriate for the estimation of the available solar resource, including complex terrain and configurations.
- CSTLibrary is CENER’s own Modelica library for the simulation of solar thermal, concentrated solar power and storage. This library allows to perform both stationary and dynamic simulations. This tool offers long-term, high-frequency synthetic climatological time series adjusted to the specific climatological and geographical conditions of the location of interest. Synthetic annual time series such as typical meteorological years and plausible years, can also be provided.
- The software SIMPV is a proprietary tool for simulating the performance of photovoltaic plants without configuration or composition restrictions, as usual in commercial software, based on high temporal resolution simulations and detailed models of the complete photovoltaic plant and its components.
If you are interested in the simulation and analysis of concentrated solar power / solar thermal electricity (CSP/STE), thermal energy storage or photovoltaic (PV) component, or the performance of the plant as a whole, this infrastructure gives you the ability to perform a study that will help you in the validation of your designs.
Testing Capabilities
The facility offers software packages for simulating and integrating solar energy systems, including ray-tracing with TONATIUH, CSTLibrary for solar thermal and storage simulation, and high-resolution timeseries data for PV systems.
Technical Equipment
The infrastructure provides software packages for solar energy system simulation and integration, including TONATIUH for optical systems, CSTLibrary for ST, CSP, and storage, long-term timeseries datasets, and an in-house PV system performance tool. Services include simulation of solar components and systems with environmental conditions, with support for user-driven modelling and simulations.
