Description

The PSI research facilities consist of the Magnum-PSI and Upgraded Pilot-PSI (UPP) linear plasma generators for plasma-wall interaction studies. They use a focused plasma beam (realised by a strong magnet) that allows for the simulation of the conditions in future fusion reactors such as ITER.

Magnum-PSI is the world's only laboratory facility that can test materials under intense heat and particle impacts (the conditions in ITER and future nuclear fusion reactors). An extensive set of diagnostics allows for detailed studies of evolving materials properties. Specific features include fusion relevant plasma parameters, heat fluxes > 10 MWm-2, high fluence/long timescale due to steady state capability, and  transient plasma loading capability up to 1 GW m-2 with a variable repetition rate up to 70 Hz.

UPP combines the potentials of a high flux magnetised linear plasma generator and with operando ion beam analysis to study the dynamic and steady-state plasma-material interaction during plasma exposure.

Testing Capabilities

Plasma material interaction, liquid metal research

Technical Equipment

Both PSI facilities are available. Additionally, DIFFER has an extensive number of more routine materials synthesis and characterisation tools and diagnostics equipment.
