Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving – Lid100ct
TA34 – CRES-Lid100ct
Location
CRES Wind Farm
19001 Keratea, Greece

Description
The main feature of the facility is a 100m mast, equipped with instruments for wind regime measurements. The mast is located at the CRES test station, approximately 50 km SΕ of Athens, 1km from shore, on a (mild) complex terrain. The met mast is fully instrumented at 5 levels (cup, vanes, ultrasonics, thermometers, etc). A lidar completes the instrumentation providing further measurements of up to 200m heights. This facility was among the first where the LIDAR’s systematic bias in complex terrain was discovered and explained. The facility is monitored and maintained by CRES personnel. Evaluation of forecast accuracy is already an on-going activity, using several global/mesoscale models. Support to new users is intended by sharing the measured wind conditions and by common research to identify the optimum ML/AI techniques, when transferring the conditions generated at the model grid (generally a few kilometres away) at the met mast location. Round-robin blind tests could also be organised.
Testing Capabilities
The facility aims to become a test-bench platform for comparing forecast predictions, necessary today for the Day-Αhead Energy Market, against online data available with web technologies (HTTP JSON/XML requests). Additionally, met mast-LIDARs dataset serves to verify and optimise CFD solvers in complex terrains by evaluating the lidar bias error per direction and per height.
