Description

Energy Lab is the research platform to support the energy transition and the technologies for the “net zero economy”. It allows the scale-up of promising technologies to semi-industrial scale (Lab to Fab) and for validation of system models and technology recommendations for the overall system in sense of the European Green Deal. The Plant Network, also known as Power-to-X Lab (PtX-Lab), comprises various synthesis routes for synthetic fuels such as Methane, Methanol and Fischer-Tropsch fuels. These integrated routes comprise various electrolyser types for hydrogen supply (water, steam electrolysis) or syngas feed (high temperature co-electrolysis, reversed water-gas-shift reactor) and the subsequent downstream catalytic reactors at a scale of several 10 to 100 kW(el).

Testing Capabilities

The modular chemical Power-to-X-complex enables investigation of steady-state and dynamic performance of Power-to-X plants and allows to assess the quality of the produced Synthetic-Natural-Gas, Fischer-Tropsch- and Methanol-to-X-fuels. Fuels are produced in semi-technical quantities and used for product analytics and application tests. Products and processes can be evaluated compared to the fuel standards and benchmark systems. Linked to Energy Lab is a large network of analytical facilities for gaseous and liquid fuels, catalysts and testing equipment for catalysts (e.g., Methanol, Dimethylether, Fischer-Tropsch, Methanol-to-X, Olefin-oligomerisation). Moreover, external users get access to experimental results, products, feedstocks from the operation of the sub-units of Energy Lab.
