Description

Key parameters of the furnace:

  • Crucible for melting is usually graphite
  • Capacity of crucible for melting and solidification – 15 - 20 l of molten silicon
  • Furnace dedicated mainly for silicon or silicon alloys
  • Power output for melting - 125 kW
  • Vacuum can be up to 10 in power to -5 millibar
  • Temperature limit for melting furnace – 2000°C
  • Temperature limit for solidification furnace – 1800°C
  • Melting furnace – induction, solidification furnace – resistant. Both under the same vacuum chamber
  • Can be used with all type of gases except oxidational (mainly used under vacuum, inert)

Testing Capabilities

This furnace can be used to melt silicon and run refining experiments through directional solidification to enhance the purity of silicon feedstock. It can also be used to run recycling experiments: for example we have crashed old silicon solar cells, applied a cleaning step and remelted. Thus, other possibilities within crystallisation can be discussed and designed.
