Description

The Solar Tower Power Plant Juelich consists of a functioning power plant with integrated heat storage. The open volumetric receiver produces up to 10 MW hot air with 700°C to heat a water-steam cycle and run a turbine which is connected to the electricity grid. The heat storage uses a packed bed ceramic material to decouple heat generation from fluctuating solar radiation. For the solar operation of the power plant, the heliostat field, which is a separate infrastructure (DLR-CSP-STJ-Helio), has to be used too.

The Solar Tower team can provide technical, engineering and scientific support. This includes the planning of experiments, the design of the test rigs and radiation shields. Simulations of the expected flux distribution as well as thermal simulations can also be performed. Furthermore, users can receive assistance with the integration of measurement systems, test infrastructure and IT hardware.

Testing Capabilities

Operations of the power plant including heat storage and process control system can be offered. This allows tests to be carried out on a complete grid-connected power plant system. Interactions with the control system and an integrated data platform can be performed. This allows, for example, new measuring systems to be tested on the system under realistic conditions. Methods for increasing autonomisation can also be tested and linked to the system during operation.

Technical Equipment

The system includes an open volumetric receiver for maximum 10 MW hot air at 700°C, a steam generator, an auxiliary gas burner, a packed bed heat storage, a steam turbine, a generator, a condensator and water pumps. Measurement and data acquisition systems, as well as tools for evaluating the performance, are included.
