Description

It accounts for a 4.2km 15kV power line arranged as a ring, feeding 7 transformation centres (400V). A decoupling power converter (1MVA) allows for emulating grids with different P/f and U/Q responses. 230kW of distributed wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) generation are installed, together with pumped-hydro, Li-ion and Pb-acid batteries, a flywheel, supercapacitors and an electrolyser.

Services offered by the infrastructure:

  • Characterisation, modelling and validation of energy generation and storage technologies in an operational environment (up to TRL7, 1MW and 15kV).
  • Adjustment of operation parameters and control strategies of energy storage systems to fulfil the grid codes of an electric grid whose dynamics can be emulated.
  • Dimensioning of energy storage according to grid conditions.

Support offered under this proposal:

A team comprising F people provides support to the use of the facility (1 Ph.D., 2 M.Sc. and 2 technicians). Moreover, the operation of the microgrid and the integration of equipment, components and new control and monitoring strategies, is supported by a larger group of another 6 engineers (4 Ph.D. and 2 M.Sc. in electric and electronic engineering).

Extraordinary scientific aspects/possibilities of the infrastructure not available at other infrastructures:

It allows for demonstrating the behaviour of energy generation and storage equipment and control strategies (up to TRL7), operating in power conditions (up to 1MW and 15kV), facing the desired P/f and U/Q grid.

Testing Capabilities

The facility offers characterisation, modelling, and validation of energy generation and storage technologies, including wind, solar PV, and various storage systems, in a simulated grid environment to adjust parameters and control strategies.
