Description

The 42kWe High Flux Solar Simulator (KIRAN42) includes IMDEA Energy’s 42 kW high flux solar simulator (HFSS) and an array of specialised test rigs and measurement techniques for comprehensive thermal, optical, and chemical characterisation. This infrastructure is designed to evaluate solar receivers, solar reactors, thermal shielding, and other components exposed to high irradiance conditions.

The facility features an independent testing room fully equipped with gases, mono- and three-phase electricity, computer data sockets, a beam attenuator, radiation homogenisers, and a computer-controlled 3-axis positioning system with a 250kg load capacity. The available services cover optical and thermal characterisation of solar concentrators, performance qualification of small heliostats, accelerated aging of absorbers and their coatings, and the qualification of heat transfer fluids. It also supports the characterisation of thermal energy storage systems, simulation and modelling of these systems, and integration into Solar Thermal Electricity (STE) plants or industrial heat processes.

Additionally, it provides solar chemistry services, including high-temperature thermochemical research, thermal and thermodynamic characterisation of prototype reactors, and solar hydrogen production process qualification.

Testing Capabilities

Testing capabilities include optical and thermal characterisation of solar components, including solar receivers, reactors, and thermal storage systems. The facility supports performance testing, accelerated aging, and solar chemistry research, with specialised equipment like a 42 kW high flux solar simulator and a 3-axis positioning system.

Technical Equipment

This includes a 42 kW high flux solar simulator, specialised test rigs, beam attenuators, radiation homogenisers, a computer-controlled 3-axis positioning system, and various measurement techniques for thermal, optical, and chemical characterisation.
