TA71LNEG-BBRI6

Location

Estrada do Paço do Lumiar, 22

1649-038 Lisboa,  Portugal

Description

TA71 is the Research Infrastructure (RI) offered at LNEG (called BBRI-Biomass and Bioenergy Research Infrastructure) belonging to the Portuguese Roadmap of Research Infrastructures [1]. The main aim of TA71 LNEG-BBRI is the development of biomass processing technologies for different end-uses (energy-based and bio-based products), the promotion of research excellence, external services provider, and training of new professionals on sustainable bioenergy and bioeconomy.

TA71-BBRI6 is offering Research and Development (R&D) and advanced training activities on solar fuels to the scientific community, professionals, universities, R&D institutes and industry. The activities will be directed towards professionals working in the Biomass and Bioenergy markets and M. Sc., PhD and Post-Doc students.

Testing Capabilities

Pyrolysis of waste biomass and other wastes into biofuels using concentrated solar power; LCI and LCA; Technical Economic Assessment (TEA) of solar fuels production.

Technical Equipment

The Solar Tower Testing Facility (STTF-100) is a central receiver- type solar concentrator that contains 36 heliostats with 16 reflectors each in a compact staggered cornfield pattern, with a total aperture of 224 m2. The solar tower was designed for a nominal thermal power of 100 kW at working temperatures ranging from 500 °C to 1000°C. Higher temperatures can be reached using secondary concentrators. All heliostats have 2 axes trackers controlled autonomously by a wireless network, with an error below 1,75 mrad. A retrofit for a 5,5 L pyrolysis reactor is in place featuring indirect concentrated solar heat using air as heat transfer fluid.

Analytical support equipment includes: HPLC-DAD, HPLC-RI, GC-FID-TCD, GC-MS. SIMA-PRO and ECOINVENT software and database, respectively for Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
