DLR – Solar Tower Power Plant Jülich – Research Platform

TA66DLR-CSP-STJ-RP

Location

Im Langenbroich 13

52428 Jülich,  Germany

Description

At half height of the Solar Tower Juelich, the research platform is located and can be used for test rigs with a heat flux of up to 1 MW/m² and a thermal power up to 1 MW limited by the available cooling water. The research platform has an area of 90 m². Test rigs can have a weight of up to 10 tons. A three-ton crane is available. Maximum aperture sizes can reach 3m x 7m. A radiation shield is available. For the solar operation of the power plant, the heliostat field, which is a separate infrastructure (DLR-CSP-STJ-Helio), has to be used too.

The Solar Tower team can provide technical, engineering and scientific support. This includes the planning of experiments and the design of the test rigs and radiation shields. Simulations of the expected flux distribution as well as thermal simulations can also be performed. Furthermore, users can receive assistance with the erection and the disassembly of the test rigs.

Testing Capabilities

The main service offered is the irradiation of test rigs at the test chamber with the specified flux and/or total power. The heliostat field control system can be individually adapted and extended for special needs of the test rigs. Flux measurement and infrared measurement (MWIR, LWIR) can be performed and evaluated.

Technical Equipment

Power supply for the test rigs is available (three-phase with 64A, 32A and 16A, as well as single-phase 16A), as well as pressurised air and nitrogen supply. Optical and infrared cameras are installed for experiment supervision.
